In 2024, the Centre for Air and Space Policy (CASP) was established in Surabaya, Indonesia, as an academic and policy-oriented hub dedicated to advancing discourse on aviation, space, and their intersections with cyber and digital domains.

The idea for CASP emerged from a growing recognition among Indonesian scholars and professionals that air and space issues could no longer be treated in isolation. The rapid evolution of unmanned aircraft systems, the commercialization of outer space, and the increasing reliance on satellite technology highlighted the need for a dedicated institution that could navigate the complex legal, policy, and security challenges accompanying these advancements.

Surabaya, with its strong academic community and technological ecosystem, became the natural birthplace of this initiative. The founders envisioned CASP as a bridge between theory and practice: a space where rigorous academic research could inform effective policy-making and strategic planning.

From its inception, CASP has focused on interdisciplinary research, public engagement, and capacity building. Its programs aim to foster dialogue on issues such as drone regulation, airspace sovereignty, space debris mitigation, and the implications of space militarisation. By convening experts from law, policy, and international relations, CASP seeks to provide comprehensive insights that address both national interests and global governance.

Guided by a mission to shape the future of air and space governance through research and education, CASP represents Indonesia’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to global conversations on aviation and space. As it grows, the Centre continues to expand its reach, offering thought leadership and collaborative opportunities to navigate the uncharted territories of the aerospace sector.
