Taufik R. Nugraha, a research fellow at the Space Law and Policy Program at CASP, shared his insights on planetary defense in Indonesia during the “Ask the Expert” program hosted by The Conversation Indonesia.
He noted that Indonesia is relatively well-prepared compared to other Southeast Asian countries when it comes to addressing natural disasters originating from outer space, as outlined in Law No. 24 of 2007 (Natural Disaster Management Act) and Law No. 21 of 2013 (Indonesian Space Act).
He emphasized that Indonesia should take a more proactive role in global efforts for prevention and mitigation by joining the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) and the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (SMPAG). With two operational space observatories—one in Boscha, Lembang, and the other at Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA)—as well as plans to operate a third observatory in Timau, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia has the capability to contribute significantly to these international efforts.
